Summer Day Camps

Thanks for your interest in Kids Cook Memphis! We’re excited about our camps for summer 2018. Full descriptions of each camp below. Registration is open!

Camps run from 9-4 each day, and will be held in the Church Health Center’s teaching kitchen in Crosstown Concourse. This year, I’m offering two 4-day camps, one during the week of June 4, and one during the week of July 2. The other 2 weeks are 5-day camps. Why cooking camp? Some kids will eat almost anything. Kids Cook Memphis’s day camps are great for those kids. But some kids are really skeptical eaters and can find their way to enjoying a much wider array of foods by cooking them. At Kids Cook, we cultivate a try-anything-once attitude, while teaching lifelong skills that will help kids develop happy, healthy eating habits.

This summer, Kids Cook Memphis will run Kitchen Basics 1, Kitchen Basics 2, Pickles, Pies, and Preserves, and Basics for Beginners. In Kitchen Basics, we focus on the fundamentals of food preparation, including safety, cleanliness, and making stuff taste good. Kitchen Basics 1 and 2 will be different, but Week 1 is not a prerequisite for Week 2. In P, P, & P, we visit orchards and farmers’ markets, then transform what we’ve found into great food. Basics for Beginners, Week of June 4, Monday-Thursday

Campers aged 6-9 will explore the world of flavors and learn to practice safety, hygiene, and practical skills, including washing and prepping fruits and vegetables, measurement of ingredients, and responsible knife and tool handling. We’ll cook in the oven and on a stovetop, and make no-cook snacks and salads. Participants will also learn clean-as-you-go practices to be implemented at home. Please have your child bring a packed lunch and water in a reusable bottle. Snacks will also be provided. Register here.

Kitchen Basics 1, Week of June 11 

Campers aged 9-12 will learn and practice safety, hygiene, and practical skills, including washing and prepping fruits and vegetables, measurement of ingredients, and responsible knife handling. We’ll cook on the stovetop and in the oven, and learn to make vinaigrettes, fresh pasta, and bread. Participants will also learn clean-as-you-go practices to be implemented at home. On our last day, participants are encouraged to invite a friend or family member to join the group for a snack. Please have your child bring a packed lunch and water in a reusable bottle. Pickles, Pies, and Preserves. Week of June 18

During this week, campers aged 9-12 will spend mornings visiting local orchards, farms, and farmers’ markets to find the best the season has to offer. We’ll spend our afternoons making everything from pickles and jams to pies and/or cobblers. On our last day, participants are encouraged to invite a friend or family member to join the group for a snack. Please bring a packed lunch and water in a reusable bottle. Kitchen Basics 2 — Summer Party! Week of July 2 (no camp July 4th)

This camp is designed for kids aged 10-14 who have attended KCM camps before or other older kids who have some familiarity with working in a kitchen. The camp will focus on creating a menu for a summer party and cooking the different dishes on that menu. Campers will continue to learn and practice safety, hygiene, and practical skills, including washing and prepping fruits and vegetables, measurement of ingredients, and responsible knife handling. We’ll cook on the stovetop and in the oven. Participants will also learn clean-as-you-go practices to be implemented at home. On our last day, participants are encouraged to invite a friend or family member to join the group for a sampling of the dishes campers have learned to make. Please have your child bring a packed lunch and water in a reusable bottle. Snacks will also be provided. Register here.
